Writing
Updated May 18, 2006

Ivy and Brick are familiar images at the University of Connecticut, where Professor Thorson makes his academic home.
For the last few years, much of my scholarly effort has gone into writing for the public, rather than peer reviewed journals for specialists. I have pursued three separate venues for this work.
BOOKS
Since 1998, I have published three books for the general readership.

I am now completing a book on kettle lakes and ponds to be published in May 09 through Walker & Company,
ESSAYS
Most of these involve New England landscapes and were published in The Hartford Courant's special commentary section, PLACE, which appears each Sunday. Others have been published in the Boston Globe, the Providence Journal, and the new London Day. Somere were reprinted by the syndicate associated with the Chicago Tribune, owner of the Courant (Los Angleles Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune).

OPINION COLUMNS
As of February 1, 2005, I have published 131 consecutive columns for the Op-Ed section of the Thursday statewide edition of the Hartford Courant. I write on the "Other Opinion" page, which means that I am completely unconstrained by, and sometimes contrary to, the position of the newspaper. Most of my columns deal with the global environment, natural hazards, academia, and philosophical approaches to Nature.
