Stone Walls and Elementary School Science

Screenshot from “The Forests of UConn” by Zack Vose. The left and right image are exactly the same area in the Fenton Tract of Uconn Forest.. On the left is leaf-off forest, mostly deciduous. On the right is LiDAR imagery of the same area. The stone walls really pop out.

This winter, I assisted Zachary Potter-Vose (Zack Vose) in creating a district-wide science curriculum involving the stone walls of the New England landscape.  He’s the Elementary Curriculum Specialist for West Hartford Public Schools (Connecticut).   Since then, more than half of the district schools have piloted a two-week module. Feedback so far has been very positive.

The image above comes from a PDF slide show: The Forests of UConn – A Colonial Era Mystery.

One of the four goals of the SWI is to enhance science teaching using New England’s signature landform.  If you have a project in mind, please feel free to contact me if you want some help. Robert M. Thorson.
